How to Rebuild Your Exercise Routine After a Break

Whether it’s been a few weeks, a few months, or longer—returning to exercise after a break can feel harder than expected.

Maybe you paused over the school holidays. Maybe travel threw you out of rhythm. Maybe you’ve been recovering from injury or illness. Or perhaps you’ve just been busy with, well… life.

Whatever the reason, it’s okay. You’re in a season of rebuilding — and we think that’s worth celebrating.

As a physiotherapist, even I struggle, but here’s what helps me (and many of our clients) ease back into exercise in a way that feels simple and sustainable.

1. Schedule it like an appointment

Once you’ve mapped out your week around work, family, and life commitments, actually book in your fitness sessions. I aim for 3x Pilates classes and a Saturday run each week. But even 1–2 activities can help you regain momentum. Remember to protect and honour that time like you would any other important commitment.

2. Lay out your gear the night before

It’s such a small thing, but it makes a big difference. I always have my shoes, clothes and water bottle ready to go, so it’s the first thing I see when I wake up. Less friction means I’m more likely to follow through with my workout. Plus, no one loves rushing or making more decisions in the morning than they need to—right?!

3. Try the 2-minute trick

On days when motivation or energy is low (especially if I need to do a home workout), I throw on my gym gear, set a timer for 2-minutes, and just start moving. This simple hack can be enough to overcome that initial resistance. No pressure to do more—but chances are, you’ll surprise yourself and keep going… because you actually feel pretty good.

4. Get support from a professional

If you’ve had time off due to injury, illness, pregnancy, or you’re not sure where to start, working with a physiotherapist or personal trainer can make a big difference. At The Wellness Boutique, our physios can design a personalised program and give you the confidence, guidance, and accountability to get moving again.
