6 Ways to Advocate for Your Health (When You Feel Like No One’s Listening)

Here are some of the things we hear from women in our consults far too often:

“I kept telling them something wasn’t right… but I was dismissed.”

“I left that appointment feeling worse.”

“No one could give me an answer.”

If you’ve ever felt unheard or overlooked when seeking help for your health, you’re not alone. It’s frustrating, disheartening—and, honestly, exhausting.

Too often, women’s health concerns are minimised, misdiagnosed, or brushed aside. This isn’t just a feeling—it’s backed by research. From endometriosis to perimenopause to pelvic pain, women are more likely to wait longer for diagnoses, receive less pain relief, and have their symptoms dismissed as “stress” or “normal.”

So… how do you advocate for yourself?

1. Back yourself

You are the expert on your body. If something feels off—it is. Remember your pain is valid, even if someone else didn’t see it. Trust your instincts.

2. Write it down

Keeping a journal can help you identify patterns and advocate for yourself. Before your appointment, jot down:

  • Your main symptoms or concerns
  • How long they’ve been going on
  • How they impact your life
  • Any patterns you’ve noticed

This keeps you stay clear and grounded, even if nerves take over in the moment.

3. Ask questions (and expect answers)

It’s okay (and important) to ask:

  • What do you think is causing this?
  • Are there other possibilities we should consider?
  • Can you explain what that means for me?
  • What would you recommend as the next step?

Clarity is part of care. If you feel rushed or brushed off, you’re allowed to slow the conversation down, ask again, or look for a provider who makes space for your questions.

4. Bring someone with you

There’s real evidence that having a support person at your appointment helps—not just emotionally, but practically. If you’re feeling overwhelmed or unsure how to explain your experience, bringing someone you trust can make a big difference. They can take notes, prompt you to ask questions, and give you the backup you deserve.

5. Learn from those who’ve been there

There’s something powerful about hearing “me too.” Support groups—online or in person—can give you language to describe your symptoms, point you toward helpful resources, and remind you you’re not alone. Sometimes, just knowing others have walked the same path is enough to give you the courage to keep advocating for yourself.

6. Get a second opinion

One provider—or even one opinion—doesn’t define your care. If you’re not being heard, keep going. Seek a second (or third) opinion until you find someone who listens. Your health is worth it.

Advocating for your health isn’t always easy, but it’s one of the most powerful ways you can say yes to yourself.
